BOISE, ID (Oct. 18, 2010) – Don Jacobson, former publisher for Multnomah and author of the newly released “God Makes Lemonade”, will be one of the publishing industry experts headlining the second annual Idaho Book Extravaganza on October 28-29, 2011 at The Boise Centre in downtown Boise, Idaho.

Jacobson headed Multnomah for 14 years where he helped launch a number of successful writers, including New York Times bestselling author Max Lucado, and oversaw some runaway bestsellers like Bruce Wilkerson’s The Prayer of Jabez.

Five years ago, Jacobson started his own literary agency – D.C. Jacobson & Associates – and represents successful Christian thought leaders like new bestselling author Francis Chan. His latest project is a series titled, “God Makes Lemonade”, comprised of contributions from writers with stories that “sweeten and inspire.”

The Cabin- An Outstanding Idaho Resource

Yesterday the Idaho Book Extravaganza team met with two wonderful ladies from The Cabin, who will be at the 2011 IBE. I was so excited to see the passion they have for reading and writing and hear stories about the impact that The Cabin is making in the community. If you are not familiar with the mission of this program or are interested in getting more involved in the writing community don’t miss talking to The Cabin in this years IBE Trade Show.

History, Mission, Programs

The Cabin incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1995 as The Log Cabin Literary Center. Its mission is to inspire and celebrate a love of reading, writing and discourse throughout Idaho and the region.

The Cabin annually serves about 750 members, over 2,000 children and youth, and over 30,000 people through educational and cultural programs. Programs for young people are the largest part of The Cabin’s work.

The Cabin has become a cultural anchor in Idaho. It serves diverse constituencies through:

  • Readings & Conversations, an annual lecture series bringing nationally-acclaimed literary figures to Boise.
  • Writers in the Schools (WITS), placing professional writers in classrooms.
  • Idaho Writing Camps, identified by the National Endowment for the Arts as one of ten model arts education programs in the U.S.
  • The Big Read, a community-based reading initiative.
  • Literary activities such as writing workshops, readings by Idaho authors, and other programs.

Google, SEO and Blogs

If you have spent anytime on the web or especially if you are a blogger I’m sure by now you’ve heard of Search Engine Optimization, SEO. Possibly you’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of information and don’t have any idea where to start. Here are a few things to note for the beginner…

  1. A lot goes into how search engines (Google) list searches. There is no turn key way to get your page to the top.
  2. Be patient and be consistent. Update your content as much as possible and keep it relevant to your topic.
  3. Submit your page to search engines. This is a great blog with links on where to do this. (its fast and easy)
  4. Use multiple forms of media, pictures, video, links etc. and tag all of them!
  5. Share your content on social media.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask for comments or for other people to share your information.
  7. Comment on and share other peoples content. The web is social its not all about you :)

Once you are comfortable with the basics, research more and learn from what other people are doing. Don’t get overwhelmed! There is a TON of information out there you do not need to do it all at once.

Marketing Basics

“Real marketing begins at the moment a book idea is conceived, and it should affect everything you do. It rests on a clear sense of who the book is for, how it will serve its audience, how and where it will be sold, and how it will compete in the marketplace. It involves among other things your choice of title and packaging, as well as the price you charge.” – David Cole, PMA Independent
